Wanting to Please is STUPID: How Authentic Relationships Improve Team Performance
There’s a lot of talk about authenticity. People who inspire are often described as: "She’s so authentic..." or "His authenticity is captivating...". But to me, authenticity is so much more.
In my experience, many people in the corporate world struggle to act authentically. This can already start with having to present in front of a group of colleagues. I observe this again and again, clearly and directly, across all hierarchy levels, from "bottom to top" and from "top to bottom."
Statements like "I can’t say that to my boss" or "How am I supposed to communicate this one-on-one in this setting?" are common. Doubts arise: "Should I even be there as a leader?" All of this, to me, is a question of authenticity. We don’t like it when we don’t please others.
For me, authenticity is less about charisma or individuality, but more about connection and relationship. The central question is: How can we be authentic in relationships? What level of genuineness can I, as a leader, or we, as a team, handle?
All of what’s going on inside of us can be understood as extremely valuable information to help a group function better and for a team to truly perform. This idea rarely reaches the surface of our awareness. Our own insecurity about "wanting to please" is often stronger.
So, how can we be authentic in our professional relationships?
Raise Awareness: Experience resistance consciously. Be curious about what’s behind it. Most people around you feel similarly. Reflection is key.
Regulate Stress: Stress affects our ability to build relationships. Techniques for stress regulation help find balance and communicate more clearly.
Promote Open Communication: Clear and appreciative communication is essential. This includes active listening and effective feedback.
My Hypothesis: Authenticity in the professional context primarily appears in relationships. Creating awareness and safe spaces for open communication generates more options for action. This not only fosters personal growth but also strengthens collaboration and mutual success within the team.
